The oldest continuously operating coffee house in the world is Queen's Lane Coffee House, in Oxford, England. Tucked away amongst the Oxford University colleges, it was opened in 1654 by Cirques Jobson, a Jewish immigrant from Syria. This was just after the end of the English Civil War; prior to this, Jews had been banned from England since 1290. The freshly installed Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell recognised the prosperity of Jewish businessmen from Amsterdam and the Middle East and encouraged them to migrate to England, bringing their businesses — and coffee houses — with them. While a nearby Oxford cafe called “The Angel” opened several years earlier, around 1650, it has been used for other trades during its history — making Queen's Lane the oldest continuously operating location. An interesting historical fact is that it was in this exact coffee house that the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham first conceived of the theory of Utilitarianism: the idea that one’s actions should maximise happiness for the greatest number of people. Perhaps he had just been served a particularly bad coffee!
