Science News: Toys on the Moon and Ear Muscles

Toys on the Moon? 

Did you know that in 2024, the Japanese space agency sent a small but unusual rover to the moon? The space agency teamed up with toy manufacturer TOMY (the creator of Transformer toys) to design the 8 cm diameter robot — which landed on the moon as a sphere, then unfurled into a wheeled vehicle after touchdown. Even the wheels used a special TOMY design to help it drive on the loose lunar soil. This unexpected partnership between a space agency and a toy designer produced LEV-2, a unique lunar rover — or maybe better classified as a Transformer?

Eary muscles

For a long time, scientists who study the human body have thought that some of the muscles in our ears were “useless”. However, they actually activate when we are focusing on listening to sounds, especially amongst noisy backgrounds. The harder that we “try” to listen, the more these ear muscles are activated.
