Although the German doctor Leonhard Rauwolf was the first European to describe the beverage coffee in 1573, he did not record the beans or plants. That was left up to Prospero Alpini of Venice — just a few years later. While serving as doctor and botanist for the Venetian consulate in Cairo in the 1580s, Prospero came across coffee plantations in Egypt — giving him rare insight into where the beverage came from. He later published a book, providing the oldest written documentation of coffee beans and plants in European literature. He wrote, “I have seen this tree at Cairo, ...so common in Egypt, to which they give the name bon or ban. The Arabians and the Egyptians make a sort of decoction of it, which they drink instead of wine; and it is sold in all their public houses, as wine is with us. They call this drink caova.” Thus European interest in coffee continued to grow…
