There was considerable suspicion among westerners as they encountered the dark, bitter brew known as “coffee” for the first time. Its addictive effect, combined with its historical association with Muslim countries, led some Europeans to call it “the devil’s drink”. When coffee reached Venice in 1615, the advisors of Pope Clement VIII strongly urged him to ban it, but he famously refused to do so before trying it for himself. Upon taking a sip, he was thoroughly impressed by the beverage and pronounced his blessing upon it. This event may have played a role in the subsequent rapid spread and acceptance of coffee throughout Europe.
