"The Old Pond" Haiku by Matsuo Bashō

In 1686, Matsuo Bashō composed what most poets consider to be the world's greatest haiku. The Japanese text is:

古池や

蛙飛びこむ

水の音

One popular English translation by Harry Behn is as follows:

“The Old Pond”

An old silent pond...

A frog jumps into the pond,

— splash! Silence again.
