Health News: Peppermint Oil Lowers Blood Pressure

A recent clinical trial from the University of Lancashire found that taking peppermint oil could be an effective way to lower blood pressure. The study participants took 0.1 mL of peppermint oil twice a day for 20 days, and saw an average reduction of 8.5 mmHg in their systolic blood pressure (the upper number in a blood pressure reading). The effects were likely due to the presence of menthol in the peppermint oil, a compound which relaxes muscles in the arteries. The researchers suggest that this could be a simple and cheap way for people suffering from high blood pressure to alleviate this.
