As coffee increased in popularity in the Ottoman Empire, it was only a matter of time until the first café appeared. According to a 17th century Ottoman historian, two large coffee shops were opened in Constantinople around 1554 AD, and rapidly attracted people from all walks of life – from the unemployed and idlers to the sheikhs and scholars. Coffee houses became a place of relaxation and pleasure, where people would talk to friends, play backgammon and chess, and read literature. More coffee shops rapidly sprung up and rich rulers began to build huge coffee houses to be rented out as investment properties. By 1655, a visitor to the city wrote, “There is no one poor or rich, who does not drink at least two or three cups a day.” Clearly the history of coffee addiction goes way back!
